Hialeah’s newest high school, Westland Hialeah, reached a milestone this week with the first varsity soccer victory. The game played Wednesday against St. Brendan left the boys’ soccer team with 4-2 win.


Located at 4000 West 18th Avenue, Westland Hialeah is the fifth high school serving Hialeah. It was built as a reliever for the already overcrowded high schools serving the area. The school opened in August of 2007 and will see its first graduating class in 2010.

The final qualifying matches for the 2009 El Nuevo Herald Copa Latina are taking place this weekend at Amelia Earhart soccer complex — the largest soccer facility for Miami-Dade County. It features four lighted soccer fields, a 590-space lighted parking lot and a 6,072-square-ibot field center with a concession, restrooms and office space.

The qualifier, offers South Florida adult players and teams a chance to win their way into the amateur event, Copa Latina which takes place in February at Ted Hendricks Stadium.

The quarter and semi-finals will be played Saturday, Nov. 8 with the finals on Sunday Nov. 9.
