FBLA Business Booming in Hialeah

As a former FBLA member I find great pride in seeing the newest addition to Hialeah academics, Mater Academy Charter Middle and High School, making their mark at the state level with 26 first place awards.

FBLA, Future Business Leaders of America is a nonprofit which allows students to participate in business-related programs.

Reggaeton arrives at Amelia Earhart

On Sunday, November 30th, at Amelia Earhart Park the sounds of reggaeton will fill the air as Fuego Entertainment hosts the first of a series of events to be presented by FuegoMio. The event present 14 reggaeton artists including Javier Voltaje, Gente de Zona USA and Luny Tunes recording artists Arcangel and Erre XI. Serving free beverages to fans will be key sponsors Beverage Plus and MC2 Energy Drink. And with a capacity of approximately 15,000 people it sounds like a lively event.

Hialeah company makes Deloitte’s 500 list

At 458 Hialeah-based Simclar, Inc. has a solid standing in Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 program and we must say it’s exciting to see one of our own among the list.

While Simclar, Inc. has offices world-wide their U.S. headquarters are located in Hialeah. The 29,000 sq. ft. facility is dedicated to cable assembly, molded cable manufacture and high-level electronics assembly — it houses 140 employees serving the needs of a wide-range of customers in consumer, automotive and general electronics sectors.

A 21-year old City Council member?

What are they thinking…
As we all know long-time Hialeah City Council member Esteban “Steve” Bovo was just elected to the Florida House, leaving a vacancy on the City Council. That vacancy was to be filled by appointment, it is after all just a one year term and the appoint would save the city some cash in running an election; however it seems we had forgotten what happens when the council is left to determine these matters.

Tuesday evening they went ahead and appointed a 21-year old St. Thomas University student to fill the seat. Now I’m sure Katherine Cue, who formerly served as Mayor Julio Robaina’s staff member, is a sharp young woman with excellent potential, but as a citizen you have and ask yourself who else could have been considered? Can the council possibly tell that there were no other qualified candidates?

Lets just clarify, Hialeah is the fifth largest city in the state, its ripe with professionals — attorneys, accountants, social workers, teachers even those who have previously served or have a long standing history of activism in the community. Miss Cue should have been left to further mature in her current staff member role, or even as a council assistant. Yes, the youth should to be represented, but youth is wise enough to know to that experience counts for something.

Her appointment won’t be official until Next Tuesday’s (Nov. 25) meeting. This is one of those moments when we need to call all the council members and express our dismay.

Hialeah Speedway memories alive and well

Considering this is the racing weekend in South Florida its only fitting that we stumbled across this story about the Marion Edwards Memorial — and with it a piece of Hialeah racing history. The race, now taking place at New Smyrna Speedway, was first held at Hialeah Speedway on October 1969 and continued each year through 2004. Sadly, the speedway closed in 2005 and its location now is home to big box retailers and smaller shops. The only sign the location was ever home to a speedway is now a mural inside Applebee’s.
But the memories are alive and well, and will be on display, albeit rather far away. This Saturday all drivers are welcome to bring their memories of Hialeah and share them with their fellow drivers and the fans during the The Marion Edwards Memorial which was brought back when a group decided to reunite Hialeah drivers.
Its a shame the reunion won’t take place in Hialeah on a weekend when racing is already in the air.

New kid in town scores a goal

Hialeah’s newest high school, Westland Hialeah, reached a milestone this week with the first varsity soccer victory. The game played Wednesday against St. Brendan left the boys’ soccer team with 4-2 win.

Located at 4000 West 18th Avenue, Westland Hialeah is the fifth high school serving Hialeah. It was built as a reliever for the already overcrowded high schools serving the area. The school opened in August of 2007 and will see its first graduating class in 2010.

Hialeah gets new OR

Hialeah Hospital is now sporting a brand new operating room. Yesterday’s Miami Herald reported the hospital has completed a $12 million makeover of its operating room. The new facility, unveiled yesterday, features nine operating suites, 12 new recovery rooms, and a new family waiting area and consultation room.

A 378-bed acute care Tenet hospital, Hialeah has served central to north Miami-Dade since 1951 and features an award-winning Weight Loss Surgery Program which is rate Five Stars and Number-One in Florida by HealthGrades®.

Veterans Day in Hialeah

Today’s a day of remembrance, a day to say thank you to all those brave men and women that have served, those that are currently serving and those that will serve.
Hialeah has a rich military history with countless vets having passed through and attended training at Hialeah Park before heading off to fight in World War II. Many of those vets came back, having fallen in love with the weather and possibilities and helped build our city to what it is today.

Hialeah Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. Triangle Park, Palm Avenue and Okeechobee Road. The event will include the presentation of colors and wreaths by J.R.O.T.C’s from various Hialeah high schools and members of the Hialeah Veteran’s Affairs Board.

Attention coffee addicts

Waiting at the light on 16 Avenue and 49 Street proved quite productive when a glance to the left pleasantly showed off a “Starbucks coming soon” sign! That’s right folks Hialeah’s getting its third Starbucks.

The new location on the corner of 16th Avenue and 49 Street is located next to the Verizon Wireless store and in the same plaza as Publix Sabor. Can’t wait this should relieve some of the foot traffic from the drive-thru one down the street.
No details on the opening date yet but we’ll keep you posted.
